However, we thought we’d talk about another experience that might be bucket list material if you are visiting California. If you’ve never been to Yosemite National Park, about a three-hour drive from Gold Country Campground, you’re missing out on a truly great experience. The all-day trip can be a cornerstone of your Gold Country experience. It is a worthy sojourn. Yosemite National Park You’re going to want to get an early start to beat the traffic that can occur around the region. The Park Service recommends arriving before 9 am. Once you’re there you might want to stop over at the visitor’s center to orient yourself and get an overview of the park. You can also visit the Yosemite Museum, but you might want to visit that when the weather is less inviting so you enjoy the breathtaking grounds. Things to do at Yosemite There are all sorts of activities to do at Yosemite National Park. Anytime of the year, you can engage in art and photography, birdwatching, hiking, ranger programs, stargazing, and tours. Around this time of year, you can also fish and bike. What could possibly be a better name for a place that produces some of the most delightful and beloved red wines – particularly zinfandel – in all of America? Why Old Vines Vineyards sprung up about the same time as the 1849 Gold Rush, to slake the thirst of the miners. Vines that are at least 50 years old or older and are important to California wine production because they produce the smallest grapes with the most intense flavors. Compared to table grapes, wine grapes look like tortured little runts. Old vine country grapes are even runtier. But the flavors they produce are without equal. What is Zinfandel Zinfandel is the Croatian name for a dark blue, almost black grape with a crazy ripening pattern. Grapes that are so ripe they have turned to raisins will be in the same bunch as grapes that are still green. The Italians call this grape ‘Primitivo.’ You will call it jammy, robust, and delicious. If you plan to visit Gold Country Campground in late August or during the fall, you’ll be right on time for the grape harvest. Zinfandel is typically grown in the summer and harvested as early as mid-August and well into Autumn, often called a “late harvest” Zin. Marinate: Lamb chops that are at least 1″ thick for 2 – 8 hours in a flavorful blend of fresh rosemary, thyme, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Maybe a little bit of cayenne pepper too. Pro tip: Put the chops in the marinade before you head out to the winery. They will be ready to grill when you get back. Grill: Sear both sides of the chops on high heat, then reduce the heat and cook until the desired internal temperature is reached. It is easy to forget that California is also wine country. In fact, California is famous for its wines. Amador County itself has some sprawling vineyards where you can experience some amazing wine. Amador County California Wines The wine business in California got its start at the same time of the Gold Rush in the mid-19th century. Many Europeans flocked to the region and they not only thirsted for gold, but wine. Therefore, wineries grew up to slake at least the thirst for wine and within a few decades there were over 100 wineries in the area, more than any other region of California. Some of the vineyards are still around today. Prohibition combined with the decline in gold mining hurt the region’s wine growing until the 1960s. He and two other individuals explored the depths of the caverns, for some, caverns manifest fear, particularly of the dark or the unknown. The Depths of Mercer Caverns History The original name for the caverns was New Calaveras Cave, because of the discovery of the skeletal remains of six people, pegged to about 2,000 years ago. Because of that and the caverns themselves, the spot quickly became a point of interest and welcomed tours. There are five whitewater kayaking runs located on the river; Fantasy Falls, Electra-Middle Bar, Ponderosa, Devil’s Nose, and Tiger Creek Dam. Some of the species you can find are Pacific salmon, steelhead trout, chinook salmon, largemouth bass, and bluegill. However, they are here, so we thought we would discuss a little about them. California Bears in Gold Country At some point, you’ve surely seen the California State Flag and its most prominent symbol, the bear. This symbol is the California grizzly bear, Ursus californicus. Not only is it on our state flag, but it is also the state animal of California. Grizzly’s once thrived in California but have been extinct since 1922. There has been talk about reintroducing the grizzly bear to the state, but the jury is still out on that. While there are still bears in California, you’re only going to find the black bear. In fact, the black bear population has been increasing over the last couple decades. What to do if you See a Bear Here are some basic bear safety rules: First, never feed or approach a bear. Second, make sure your food is stored out of the reach of a bear. Third, keep your site clean. If you do see a bear, what you need to do will vary on what is happening. A fleeing bear is great. Just watch it go. If the bear is habituated, stay calm and see if it is aware of you. If it isn’t, move away quietly. If it is aware of you, speak in a low tone, wave your arms, and back away. If it is feeling threatened by you, stop and face the bear, slowly back away, making sure the bear has a way to get away. Don’t run, this may trigger a predator response. However, we realized that one of the places to visit here, is but a short drive away. Just past Indian Grinding Rock in nearby Volcano, you’ll discover a truly underground experience, near Gold Country Campground, the Black Chasm! Black Chasm History The first documented exploration of the Black Chasm was in 1854, when explorers delved below the earth and discovered a bright blue lake with millions of sparkling crystals that twisted from the walls in all directions. In the early days the simple tours observed the antechambers of a much larger, more extensive experience. After the decline of the Gold Rush, the Black Chasm was abandoned and forgotten by all but the most dedicated scientists and explorers. Fast forward 100 years and the Black Chasm is now recognized by the federal government and in 1976 was designated as a National Natural Landmark. This 50-minute guided tour departs from the Black Chasm Visitor Center and descends 100 feet below the surface. No more than 25 individuals can be on the tour due to the constraints of the cave size. If RV water lines or the water pump are not protected by a heat source, use a small space heater to help prevent freezing. Practice safety precautions by keeping space heaters the appropriate distance away from RV components and vents. Adding a small amount of antifreeze in holding tanks can protect the valves from freezing. Only dump tanks when they are full to reduce the risk of freezing. Keep waste valves closed when not in use. An Excessive Cleaning fee will be assessed for any cleaning required beyond the normal turnover. Golf Cart Policy Golf carts are not allowed on the property without prior approval from campground management. Approval must be obtained before arrival. Unauthorized golf carts are prohibited on campground property. General Conduct All guests must follow campground rules and staff instructions. Quiet hours and courtesy policies must be observed and respected for the comfort of all guests. Use of campground amenities without proper registration or payment is prohibited.
